better gas mileage through aerodynamics
A few weeks ago I saw this post by a guy that modded his car to improve his gas mileage by 15%! His trick was simply to add a tail to the rear. Why don’t we all do this?! I thought. Well, a friend suggested, people like having a trunk. The appearance of the car is important. And parking space and whatnot.
Today I saw this awesome photo of an owl in flight. Notice how the tail feathers form a nice aerodynamic shape.
So, I thought, why can’t we give our cars tailfeathers? That is, some soft, adjustable, or retractable rear piece that specifically “opens” during high speed travel when it will give the greatest advantage. Additionally, it could provide a small degree of rear cushion in a collision.
