Is a Haitian renaissance in the cards?
January 21st, 2010Post-tragedy, Haiti now has at least two of the factors that medieval Europe did before the Renaissance: labor shortage and technological influx–the latter in the form of solar panels and cell phones being brought in. I imagine this could drive up the cost of labor–which will be needed to rebuild the structural damages–and enrich the populace.
Or maybe the government (Haiti has consistently ranked among the most corrupt countries in the world on the Corruption Perceptions Index. ) will just reap the bulk of the reward.
My bet, however, is that Haiti will be better off in 1-2 years than it was before the earthquake (in purely economic terms).
